Why Are Retreats So Important for Wellbeing?

For many years I’ve been called to attend wellness retreats. Typically, in January each year, you’ll find me (usually alone) in a beautiful country such as Spain, Maldives, Bali, Goa, India, Costa Rica or even here in a remote setting in the UK. I find it’s just the tonic I need to rest, recharge, rejuvenate and reset ready for the year ahead. But these are just a few of the many reasons why retreats are so important for your wellbeing.

The types of retreats I’ve chosen over the years have been for different reasons; Personal Growth, Yoga, Rest, Meditation, Detox, Conscious Travel… My choices reflect whatever my mind, body and soul are yearning for at that time.

A retreat is an incredible opportunity to leave our daily lives behind and find time to recharge and rediscover ourselves. Going on a retreat means pausing to take stock of how we’re handling our lives, giving us the space to make a change and move forward. It is a moment that provides us with the clarity to face the “problems” or challenges that life puts in our path.

Wouldn’t you agree that life moves so fast? Technology makes our day-to-day easier and yet more stressful. Our bodies’ natural state is not accustomed to this rhythm, making breaks away from this is ever-more necessary. We must silence the noise, and take a moment to sit with ourselves, bringing the peace and strength we need for our journey through this life.

Benefits of going on a retreat

Here are ten reasons and benefits for going on a retreat or into a period of a retreat from daily life:

  1. Disconnect from the inertias of daily life
  2. Have time for reflection
  3. Get to know yourself better
  4. Relax at a deeper level
  5. Find your true self
  6. Contemplate and learn from life’s small details
  7. Create and build
  8. Recharge
  9. Rejuvenate and uplift your spirit
  10. Find new focus for your whole life or areas of your life, career, business, relationships, health, finances, etc.

A ‘retreat’ is not an absence; rather it is the search for a true life of presence.

Everyone needs to unplug, refocus and reboot and sometimes. Daily life just gets in the way, and we spend our time on this planet ‘doing life’, becoming trapped in a routine and being overwhelmed. And this diminishes our creativity to improve or change our lives for the better.

Pulling away from the everyday on purpose to retreat from life’s pressures or ruts once in a while is a healthy way to balance priorities and seek inner wisdom to put things into a clearer, aligned perspective. Therefore, being open to changing your life, with clarity, confidence and courage. This can be the pivotal turning point in your life.

Retreats deepen your connection

Why have another year ahead of you, just like the one that’s past? You are the creator of your own future, the artist of your life; take the paintbrush and paint the life you dream of.

Sadly, I didn’t have the opportunity to escape to an exotic location this year. I had my heart set on Peru and Costa Rica to deepen my connection to our great Mother Earth / Pachamama and to receive many gifts; physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. But I wasn’t going to let the current travel complications stop me from having this all important ‘me time’. So, instead, I committed to a 7-day retreat at home, focussing on personal growth, detoxing, spirituality and healing.

It was a very intense period of complete isolation, abstinence and fasting to help me go in deeply, as a rite of passage into Shamanic training. My body was cleaned, calmed to the point of quietness, which was required for me to hear and feel my innate wisdom and gifts held deep inside of me, waiting for me to tap into them.

I embrace my life’s purpose, calling and responsibilities as a Medicine Woman seriously.  This home retreat was my endeavour to help me explore all corners of me, to give more gifts, to be fully in service to self, humanity and our blessed Mother Earth / Pachamama at this time and years ahead.

I’m forever grateful and blessed to be able to make a deep commitment of a 7-day retreat and so much transformation has occurred, which I am still integrating. So I will tell you more about this another time. All I can tell you is that I feel an immense amount of inner peace, joy, powerful decisiveness and clarity about exactly what I’m calling in for 2022!

If you’re interested in trying out a retreat experience, I recommend starting with a retreat day to give your mind, body and soul the pause and tranquillity they need. Going on any type of retreat is a spectacular opportunity to focus on your inner self.
