Why is Meditation So Powerful?

Why is Meditation So Powerful?

I have both explored and played with meditation over many years. But if I’m totally honest with you and myself, in the early days, I wasn’t really meditating or doing this for the right reasons. It was a tick box exercise – there we go, I’ve done my meditation today! So, why is meditation considered to be so powerful?

It’s only been in the past few years where I have become more respectful of the power of meditation. This was because it’s got me through some of the toughest challenging times in life! It’s just part of who I am now; part of my daily rituals and practices. It’s been a real gift!

Meditation is also a tool I use in all my events and coaching sessions. It helps people to ground and centre themselves before we embark on a journey to their inner world to access their innate gifts, wisdom, insights and inspiration.

You don’t have to be a Buddhist monk sitting peacefully at the top of a mountain to learn how to use meditation as a way to calm down and take a break from the outside world. Meditation is something we can all integrate into our lives – you can master the challenge of unplugging from the outside world. Even if you have a hectic lifestyle and a busy job. It just takes commitment, patience and the right intention.

Meditation helps you to focus

Maybe you’ve tried meditation in the past and you just can’t seem to settle into it?

Maybe you start with meditation to fix something, like feeling stressed?

I must tell you this – meditation is not used to fix something, it helps to prevent you having to fix something in the future. It helps you to be less reactive and you get to choose your response to the everyday challenges you are faced with both internally and externally.

Meditation puts you in a place where you are very calm and can observe the situation. It brings inner awareness of who you are, so you can take a step back out of the heat of the situation. You then see the situation in a non-responsive way, with a clear head, so you can consider your options. In this situation, these thoughts might arise: “how should I think, what should I speak and how do I react?” You are more likely to experience the best outcomes that give you peace and happiness.

Meditation is the habitual process of training your mind to focus and redirect your thoughts. You will have thoughts cross you mind; some days, I still do if I have a lot going on in life, this is natural. The key is the awareness of the thought, and instead of getting into the thought, to allow it to pass like a cloud passing by in the sky.

Meditation is good for your health

The popularity of meditation is increasing as more people discover its many health benefits. And in our busy lives, meditation can help you take a breather.

You can use it to increase awareness of yourself and your surroundings. Many people think of it as a way to reduce stress and develop concentration.

People also use the practice to develop other beneficial habits and feelings, such as a positive mood and outlook, self-discipline, healthy sleep patterns, and even increased pain tolerance.

There is science-backed evidence for the benefits of meditation:

  • Reduces Stress
  • Controls Anxiety
  • Promotes Emotional Health
  • Enhances Self-Awareness
  • Lengthens Attention Span
  • May Reduce Age-Related Memory Loss
  • Can Generate Kindness
  • May Help Fight Addictions
  • Improves Sleep
  • Helps Control Pain
  • Can Decrease Blood Pressure

You can use meditation to remember who you are; you are the spiritual self, the soul, using the mind, body, and emotions to have a human experience.

More importantly, meditation is accessible anywhere. You don’t need specialised equipment or space. You can practice meditation with just a few minutes daily to reap the benefits.

Meditation is something everyone can do to improve their mental and emotional health.
